If so, it means that this engine was rebuilt at some time using a case imported as salvage from europe. That's okay, I've done the same thing myself. It sounds like you have a US 72 FI engine that has been rebuilt with a European case. This FI engine originally came with a breather box that had 2 plastic plugs on top and no side outlet. I gather that you now have the earlier box that has a single plastic plug and a side breather outlet. You need an earlier air cleaner to go with it. That air cleaner will have the port you are missing. This is the way to go to get things straightened out. With the 72 engine there is something you should check out: look at the front plate on your IAD. For 72-3 the front plates had a tube welded to them that sweeps around the right side and then points to the rear, near the cold start valve. This tube used to connect to the 72-3 breather, but you are better off just setting this up like a 68-71 and plugging that tube. Run your breather hose to the (early) air cleaner. > Again I failed to explain well enough: I was able to figure out where on > the air cleaner the AAR connected, but wasn't sure which port on the AAR > itself connected to the air cleaner, and which port connects to the AID. > I would assume it either doesn't matter or if it does that it would be > the lower one. The horizontal port on the AAR connects to the underside at the front of the IAD. The vertical port connects to the air cleaner. > So yes, it is a 72 engine...what does that mean the 3/16"s port on the > AID is? 72s (only) got a distributor with both vacuum advance and retard. It is based on the size that I > am doing this on, but I wanted to be certain. The port a 1 O'clock is for the charcoal cannister. You need an earlier air cleaner to go with your earlier setup. I have any of these parts that you might need. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
