I just got the stud out of my toolbox, it is 40mm long, and actually looks to be 8mm diameter. It does not appear to have broken off of anything else...I can't imagine where this came from...I am wondering about just trying to put the spark plug back in, and if it goes in, then trying to run it. But to be on the safer side I will probably let it sit until I can pull the engine...and be able to see in the hole better. I need to pull it anyway for an exhaust gasket overhaul, and new clutch and distributor(granted I know I only need to pull it for the clutch, but it should be easier to do all of that with the engine out... -kevin -----Original Message----- From: Jim Adney [mailto:jadney@vwtype3.org] Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 10:32 PM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: RE: [T3] spark plug spit out On 22 Jul 2003 at 17:18, Kevin Guarnotta wrote: > When I tried to put the spark plug back in-it hit something right inside the > engine tin. That's the only thing of that size (a 10mm stud would have nuts with 15mm across the flats) in that area. The only problem is that the head studs are ~10" long and they wouldn't come out this way. You'll have to tell us whether this is part of something longer that has broken off, or if is just a stray stud that got left in there accidentally. Both options seem pretty unlikely to me, however. If you look at the head stud tightening drawings in the Bentley manual, ch. 3, pg 19, you can see the relative locations of the studs to the spark plug holes. You should even be able to stick a finger in there and feel the head nuts and see if one is missing. If you're not sure, feel around a different SP port for comparison. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
