daniel, i believe this might really be a big part of the problem (if everything else is running fine). your engine never got up to good operating temperature to allow for some "internal cleanup". carbon deposits (which might explain black smoke) *will* build up if an engine is never allowed to heat up properly.


i once owned a 1961 bug that had one of the sweetest-running engines in it i had ever known. it was adjusted to a tee - but since i only ever got to run it and play with it once a year or so (car was in germany, i am here) it *always* blew noticeable black smoke when i ran it.
