The superficial cracks in the overflow hose MAY go all the way thru; it's really hard to tell just by looking. The tell-tale signs are when you see signs of fluid running down the inside fender well under where that hose comes out. If the tank has been out is is very possible that the rubber sealing rings that go between the tank and neck nipples and the rubber connecting hose are gone/mis-installed/torn. These just look like large rubber bands and MUST be there to get that connection to seal. Look at all these things RIGHT AFTER you fill up the tank at the gas station.
