Re: [T3] Heat exchangers

PeterL=> Do the small he's make much difference

They make a significant difference on the older cars, they make much larger
difference on the later ones. Absolutely.

=> Is there a great advantage to the original setup?

Several, I think:

* The heat system works properly.
* Exhaust capacity is better matched to the (stock) engine.
* The exhaust doesn't hang out like a hemorrhoid and get knocked off by
speed bumps.
* Proper fit and heat shielding protects your intake boot and rear apron.
* OE mufflers and exhaust parts are easier to install and work around, and
they last a *lot* longer.

The main disadvantage of the stock setup is the big nuts that connect the
muffler to the rear heat exchangers. In salty climes these can seize up and
be so hard to undo that many people just give up in favor of a cheapo
aftermarket muffler. The answer to this problem is to use high-quality
copper antiseize when assembling this connection and service the muffler
before it's gone to shreds. Those rear heat exchangers are rapidly growing
in value.
