I strongly recommend that you NOT try to do anything to 
the gear. It is likely to crumble, or just come loose 
again. I have a jig that allows me to put 3 rather smooth 
"dimples" in the shaft. This gives it better purchase in 
the gear. You will still have trouble getting everything 
back together without damaging something else. I made 
fixtures for all these operations, although I managed 
without these in the beginning.
