A half hearted attempt was made to convert, but the 
ones in charge of the conversion didn't believe in 
metric, so they rigged it to fail by sticking with
English predominant/Metric equivalent. How can you 
learn Kilometers by reading signs with 43 miles and 
69.2 kilometers. If signs were re-positioned to 
read 89 kilometers/55.3 miles Americans would begin
to learn round metric numbers.

Jeff - off topic, but worked on a project with 
Metric/Eng dimensions on hardware drawings and
Eng/Metric dimensions on tooling to build the
hardware. It was loads of fun!

I remember in grade school (twenty-some years ago)
when all the instructional material was talking about
how the metric system was going to become dominant
within about 3-5 years.

I guess someone panicked, because it never happened.
