So, last update here. Jim, I got your resistor, and checked it against my VOMs and you were right, the one I was using was not working properly. But I had one that did, and it measured your resistor at 4 ohms. So, using that VOM, I measured across the DF and D+ on the generator with all the wires removed, and got a reading of 3.5 ohms. ..which checks out. Everything's been running fine since.
