The best gas mileage that I ever got out of my stock '74 412 wagon (EC: 
1.8 liter, 76 hp, Bosch L-Jetronic) was about 29-30 mpg on a trip from 
San Francisco to San Diego.

It gets amazingly bad with constant short-distance driving in cold 
weather with the gas heater turned on. I have seen it fall below 15 
mpg...
