Speaking of calibration. . . . The set of thickness gages you buy in sets are very, very accurate. I had an occasion to measure thickness to .000 001" accuracy on various locations of some thin material for work. The problem with measuring, at that level of accuracy, is the micrometer gets warmed up with me holding it, and the temperature change results in a change in measurement. I took my set of feeler gages from my Sqbk into the calibration lab to be measured by their laser mic to use as a local standard. If the measurement changed, I had to wait for the mic to return to room temperature. I measured 5 locations, checked the standard, continue until the standard changed. The cal lab folks confirmed that the feeler set was indeed, very accurate, much more accurate than I would have thought, and well within acceptable limits for use on valves. I had them test two sets, just to be sure the first wasn't a fluke.
