[T3] visit w/ the Baroness
<x-flowed>
Checked out Lori's '71 AT Squareback in S.F. today. First
off, we installed the new spark plugs. The metal insert on the #1
plug wire receptacle stayed behind on the plug when the wire was
removed. Dang plug wires look pretty original, afaik... hard and
brittle, VW part numbers on the elbows at the cap. Red rubber boots
(so *that's* how they install!) on two or three of the wires' plug
ends.
We managed to stick that #1 receptacle assembly back
together; seems to be ok at the moment. I'm thinking that new plug
wires would be a good idea. I guess that the cap ends should be
retained? What's wrong with the Bosch 90deg elbows at the cap?
Found that the manifold pressure sensor hose was disconnected
from the manifold... we may have knocked it off while working on the
plugs, or maybe it was the cause of the poor running. In any case,
after the plug swap and reconnection of the pressure sensor hose, it
seemed to run fine.
Meanwhile, there's quite a rattle in the rear. Generator/fan
housing area, probably left of center. Seems to not be exhaust or
muffler. It increases in frequency with rpms, but only occurs at low
rpms. Here, like this:

Fan shroud screw? Or, what do bad generator bearings sound like?
Any other ideas?
Jim -- I forgot to check charging system voltage.

p.s. -- The Baroness has a perfect cloth engine lid strap w/ metal hook. D'oh!
p.p.s. -- I was excited by seeing *three* M-codes on the pulley
housing, but they were just FI, AT, and charcoal filter.
