That sounds like you need new points...i forget what causes this, it is a
natural part of the wearing process of the points. You could file it away,
or just get new points.

I have another question about points.  I've been using a feeler gauge,
then checking with the tach dwell.  I have a lot of trouble with the
gauge.  When I slip it between the points, I feel a little bump in
there---is that normal, or is there some kind of blemish or deposit on
the point (I think it's on the one that doesn't move, the one to the
left).  If it's normal, should the gauge slip under the bump, or do I
just put it on the side of the bump?
