Nope.  They're all inside.  Or, at least with rear-engined VW and up until
mid-80's Porsches (just about all types of Porsches use similar axles to
VW).

Honestly, I've never considered putting them on the inside.  There is _so_
much axial play on the axle itself when installed that I think if you were
within one washer thickness of binding then you have other problems.
<shrug>
