My only thought was that if they were looking for transient behavior, it might be masked by a heavier model. Fast changing wind currents would be more apparent on a lighter model, but I agree with the gimmick aspect, as they probably had the right material on hand. The interesting thing about this was that it was done at about 1/4 scale in carbon fiber composite. but no one there could answer the question of why they also bothered to actually make the model out of carbon fiber....
