> my red light comes on dimly at first (but not as soon as i start the car, > it's usually several minutes before the light starts to come on) then more and > more solid, and it happens quickly(within a couple minutes) at night with my > lights on, i haven't had the opportunity to see if it changes at high speed > cause i don't want to get stuck on the highway. yesterday when i was asking this question i had driven my car to work, and when i went to restart it, it was dead. so i let it sit for a while and tried again every so often. later in the afternoon after i tried and it didn't go i called my wife to come give me a jump. when i went to put the cables on my bus after alreadyy hooking up the fasty, i got a quick smart spark, so i knew immediately that that meant i was trying to hook the cables up backwards...how could this be?? i went back to the fasty to double check my connections. i had them on what appeared to be the right posts, however, it seems that in my hast and excitement when i was getting the car to run, i had hooked up the battery backwards.(!!!???!?!?!) so i quickly changed the connections and it jumped just fine, started right up and everything. as i was driving it home i realized a few things, the blinkers were trying to work, the gas guage works, and the clock seemed to work better. also the red light was on very bright and constant. after i got home i went through all of jim tests to see what i screwed up, the generator checked out fine, i found out that my oil sender needs replaced, the battery was very drained from not recieving any repleneshment from the generator(right?) ever since i hooked it up, and the red light would still not go off. so i started disconnecting wires from the voltage regulator one at a time while the car was running, or the key on, i can remember which now....and the red light went off. now it comes one like it's supposed to and goes off when it's supposed to also. is it luck? have you ever done this? everything seems to be working fine now, we are going to start a new series of test runs with the car over the next 2 weeks and see if anything changes or improves, while i constantly monitor the charging system and other stuff... -matthias portland, oregon '66 type I '74 type II '67 type III fastback (* ...what left a mark no longer stains, grace makes beauty out of ugly things.... -U2 *) ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
