 Also, the tube in which the clutch cable runs can break off from it mounts
 in the pan, and move when you press in the pedals - effectively making the
 pedal need a longer push.

 I had this same problem.  With my car it was just a loose clutch cable.
 Once it was adjusted correctly it shifted fine.

Do Type 3's have bowden tubes? My guess is "Yes". If the bowden tube were out 
of adjustment, it would cause grinding occasionally. Adjust the bowden tube 
in such case. The bowden tube is a tube between the clutch and the 
transmission and must 
have a slight bend in it. If Type 3's don't use bowden tubes, what do they 
use?
