<x-charset iso-8859-1>RussW=> I think this was started by => "authorized mechanics" at the dealers. I have to say I don't think the 'correct' procedure is all that good, either, so I can understand why this came about. Relying on belt tension to turn the engine is iffy and you can't really get a decent-sized socket wrench in there anyway. Then there's that little bit of reinforcement next to the timing hole that seems to invite abuse. (Reality check: what's it like to turn over a V8 by hand?) I'd love to have a cleaner way to do this, but my method of choice is to use a medium-sized pry bar with a spade end; down through the generator cover, place the spade in the teeth of the pulley and pull to the right, against the inside seam of the shroud, which puts some stress on the tin and bolts, but has so far not caused any distortion I've discovered. This turns the engine backward (about four pulls per half-rotation), and I check the valves sequentially (1,2,3,4). Is that weird or what?
