You should make sure the little screw which anchors the release lever plate
to the DASH is in place, so that the stress is not taken by the cardboard
glove box itself.

This also allows you to get all the cable stroke you need.

You should adjust the hood alignment by loosening the bolts on hinges and
moving the hood slightly. It is very useful to have some help while you do
this, because there are all sorts of way which these parts can slide with
respect to each other and each of them causes some change in alignment.

It can be useful to completely remove the upper latch half while you do this,
just to get the hood alignment correct to the rest of the car.

You can pull back the wire and lube the cable. Note that the inner wire is
plastic coated and I have seen that coating break near the housing end and
get caught on that end when you try to pull on the cable. Make sure that it is
not binding now.

After you've aligned the hood to the car, then you can align the upper latch
half to the lower half. You can adjust how far the hood is pulled down when it
is latched by screwing the latch pin in or out of it's plate. Tighten the lock nut
when you are done.

The hood's front vertical alignment is controlled by the 2 rubber bumpers
which screw in and out of the hood. Use these to jack the hood to the proper
height.
