My car is a '66.  The collapsible shaft will fit?  Is the length,
diameter, and steering wheel splines and attachment nut threads the same?

Yes the manual I have is the factory Workshop Manual VW 1500 Vol. 1
(unfortunately I don't have Vol. 2)
