The kind of support you have has nothing to do with this.

The 68 and 71 use different pressure plates. You need to match the pressure 
plate to the transmission, so in your case you need an early 200mm 
pressure plate, the one with the release ring in the center. If you have the 
wrong one it there that would likely cause some problems.

The other possibility is that the problem is due to the steel line in the tunnel 
coming loose at the rear. If this is the case, putting in the HD PP would just 
put more stress on everything and cause more problems.

Keep in mind that you don't need a HD PP unless you have an engine much 
bigger than stock. For a stock 1600 it is just a waste of money and an 
invitation for problems.
