I had this happen on a Bug I used to own. I had the occasional grinding
noise until the wheel bearing just broke and got ground to bits. The wheel
was very difficult to pull with the remains of the bearing welded to the
spindle. You really need to look at the bearings now, before you drive any
more.

I'll go one better Mark...on my former Mk1 Jetta, I had the same noise and
noticed the left rear rim was getting very hot and on the way home from
school had the wheel bearing weld itself to the stub axle, shear out the
center of the brake drum, and the entire drum (still bolted to the wheel)
came off the car and passed me in the center of town! The Jetta slid to a
gentle stop, and Amos (the county sheriff--please no "Murder, She Wrote"
jokes) had a very good laugh at my expense....
