How about once it starts? 

Have you checked your fuel filler overflow hose? It is probably cracked and 
has been letting dirt and water into the gas tank. If it leaks gas out when you 
top up the tank, fix it and the pump may recover.

You may need to replace the filter and clean the screen in the tank.
