Hi all, I was driving down a country road yesterday when suddenly, I heard a loud explosive pop coming from the engine compartment of my 1972 fastback. I had my foot off the gas, coasting down a hill in gear when it happened. After the explosion, the exhaust sounded orders of magnitude louder, but the engine continued to run fine, so I drove her home. When I parked, I looked under the engine compartment to discover a very large hole in the muffler near where it connects to the tailpipe that seems to have been caused by an outward explosion (there where tears of metal pushing outward). Is this just muffler failure or a symptom of worse things to come (excess backpressure??? If there is such a thing)? The good news is that she sounds like a little hot rod now. Unfortunately, the neighbours aren't too happy about it. Thanks for any advice, wade ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
