Have you checked the charging system voltage? This is THE MOST
COMMON CAUSE of this problem and is easily fixed with a replacement
voltage regulator for ~$30.

Measure the system voltage after a drive, at the battery, at medium RPM. It
should be 14.1-14.4V. If it is less than 13.5V replace the VR with a genuine
Bosch.

Have you made sure that the overflow hose is not leaking your gas out onto
the pavement?

Don't give up on this. The 71 FI is EXCELLENT and can probably be fixed
with just a little help. If it's not fixed by Parma, we can do it there in just a
few minutes, I'm sure.

Of course I'm assuming you have already checked and verified the following:
dwell, timing, valve lash, mechanical and vacuum advance (both working?)

I'd be willing to BET MONEY that the torque converter is fine. They can
break, but they don't just get weak. ;-)
