Yes, there were 2 different diameters. I think the diameter and voltage 
changed at different times, but I don't remember the sequence. I seem to 
recall that the early 12V generators were smaller, so he might be able to find 
one of those that would fit in his old fan housing saddle. It would have lower 
output ratings than the later one, however.

between. These were all the larger diameter.

The Bosch replacement list doesn't seem to bear all this out. It just lists the 
GR-13X as the replacement for 62-6 (the 6V years) and the GR-16X as the 
replacement for 67-73 (the 12V years.) This makes it look like the voltage 
and diameter changes occurred at the same time.
