Hi Hal,
Bath is between Avebury and Glastonbury, about 20 miles from each - it's an
attractive and much visited city, with a history back to Roman times. If
she would like to call in on my wife and I, we're just 10 miles from Bath,
in a village called Pensford. (Type 3 content:- There are 4 Type 3s here
if that's of interest, though 2 need extensive work! I'm going to have time
to start restoring them now I've taken early retirement).

The city of Wells (she'll go through there to Glastonbury I expect) has a
very attractive cathedral with an elegant and most unusual scissor truss
supporting the spire - something like a 50-foot high figure-of-eight in
stone.

If she likes prehistoric sites, Stonehenge is about 30 miles from Bath, but
Avebury is older and much more extensive, with a pretty village too.

What sort of things interest her? Stately homes? Longleat House goes down
well with visitors from America - it's in the same area - more
commercialised than it used to be though. You can also get anything for
your dolls' house there! Stourhead is good for its magnificent landscaped
gardens. There is an American museum just on the edge of Bath, but maybe
it's a bit silly to come to England to see examples of USA life! Bath
costume museum, etc etc. There's lots to do and see within an hour's drive
of Bath.

Bristol has a developing waterfront area with science exploratorium, IMAX
cinema, the SS Great Britain, the first ocean going propellor-driven iron
ship, built by Isambard Brunel, and used in the mid-1850s to carry emigrants
to California [gold-fields?] and later Australia. IK Brunel's suspension
bridge is on the edge of the city 200 feet above the river. Not bad for the
mid-1800s; pretty clever, those Victorian engineers.

If she can't find anywhere serving spotted dick (it might be more of a dish
for winter), I'm sure my wife could make a lovely suet pudding with
currants, and thick custard. She's just shown me the recipe in a cookbook.

Any more info needed, just ask!
Home phone number in England: 01761-490653 (I fly to Chicago on 6th
August).
