Glad this turned out okay. BTW, VW's instructions on the ball joints, to avoid 
the chance that someone would overgrease them, was to install the zerks, 
grease appropriately, remove the zerks, reinstall the plastic plugs.

Repeat every 100,000 miles.  ;-)   <I made this part up.>

I find that this is pretty common. I have not been able to find correct 
replacement boots. Anyone have a source. The VW parts list and WCM's 
catalog are BOTH wrong: What they both supply are boots for the earlier 
ends with the smaller taper pins. The early boots don't last long when 
stretched over the late joints.
