The buttons I've seen were all smooth on the OD, but I get your picture. Yes, 
the grip comes off, but with difficulty. The little white plastic piece has to be 
lifted while you pull. Takes at least 3 hands, some fancy language, and just 
the right position of the tongue.  ;-)
