Finally I have a clue as to what is going on: When I turn the volume screw on the left hand carb all the way in with the engine running, the rpms go up and up. This is I believe what is supposed to happen. When I do the same with the right hand carb, nothing happens. So, I assume there is something wrong with the right hand carb. Does this mean that petrol is leaking from one part of the carb to another? I'll take the carb apart when I get the chance, which may be some time from now as I am going to be a bit busy in the near future. One thing I did do is replace the rubber part of the balance pipe on the right-hand carb. This has certainly improved the situation somewhat, probably for all the wrong reasons ;~) Also, I have noticed a (smallish) puddle under the car. I can't tell what is it is. It looks like engine oil, but it could be ATF mixed with crud. It appears to be leaking from the join between the engine and the torque converter, so I suppose it could be either. I've put a pan under the car and we'll see what lands in it. It's possible that it only leaks when the car is running. There seem to be so many things springing leaks and behaving oddly all at once, that I may finally have no alternative but to tear it down and overhaul it. The annoying thing is that the engine itself is actually in very good shape. It's just everything else that's crapping out. Finally, the starting problem turned out to be a low water level in the battery. I honestly thought that modern batteries didn't have to be topped up. Feel free to laugh..
