You may want to clean out the other side, too. It's probably got a lot of stuff in it, too. It's better than waiting for the driver's side to fill up with water. ;-) These might even still be available from the dealer, because they were used on beetles, too; maybe even on rabbits. Early ones were silver, late ones are black and are probably the only ones available now. The seals are all alike. They are commonly cracked, etc, but they usually don't let in much water just because they sit on a flat surface. I think your airbox was probably the main problem. You may have to keep an eye on them.
