Re: [T3] Is this a good deal?
<x-flowed>>I noticed this on the type3 website classifieds. It is only about 15
minutes from me. I don't know if the seller is on the list, but what >does
everyone think about the price, etc, for this one? I am trying to keep
myself from going for a test drive <grin>, but I may cave yet!

It NEVER hurts to go check something out, BUT if I recall correctly this
would be your first aircooled? At any rate the ole rust meter on that car
looks like its pretty high.
If you go look at the car, wear something you dont mind crawling on the
ground in, inspect the thing all over. Lift up the rear seat and look at the
pan underneath, also if you can move the batter some and look around it.
Take the battery out of the car if you can and check under it.
Also lift up the carpeting on the floor, especially in front of the rear
seat and check the floor. Inspect the door jambs, the A pillar looks like it
might be rusty. Check the fender wells especially at the bottom where the
pan joins the body. Open the rear hatch and inspect the very rear of the
area. There is a little lip (inside of the car) at the rear, you may have to
pull up the insulation to get a look at it.
Pull out the spare tire, and look at the bottom of the spare tire well.
Check out the entire pan from the underside, then check it out again. Look
for any holes or severe rust.
IMHO try to avoid anything with body rot otherwise known as cancer, its the
most difficult thing to correct, especially on a type 3 as replacement parts
ccan be harder to find. Its the kind of thing you need to take the car apart
for, and unless you have the tools (welder, grinders etc.) and knowledge its
expensive to fix.
