<x-flowed>There should be tin above and below the cylinders. Are you looking through a hole on the top tin? I assume your not missing all of it. There is also an often-forgotten piece of tin that goes above the pushrod tubes and below the cylinders. I can't think of any way that you would be able to see the ground if all the tin is installed. *unless* you're seeing the ground from behind the engine. Unlike the type 1 the type 3 engine compartment is not completely isolated. It isolates the cooling air from the hot air by means of that rubber cooling air intake bellows.

I believe that I do have all the tin installed? When I am looking down on
the engine I can see the ground on both sides of the engine, is this
supposed to be closed off? And I don't know much about the air valve
controlled by the thermostat?
