[T3] Over heating, timing?

I have just got my '69 squareback together for the first time so that it is
drivable. Over the past few months, I have been asking questions about the
FI pressure sensor; this doesn't make me to proud but, I never even messed
with the adjustment screw as I had thought, it was only the cap screw plug
that covers the adjustment screw. At least I now know that the setting of
the pressure sensor hasn't been tampered with!

All the components of are properly connected on the engine. Fuel pressure is
28-29 psi. New plug wires and bosch plugs properly gapped. Compression is
unknown. The car runs fairly well, not to much power, although the P.O. told
me that it had been quit some time since the last overhaul. I am also
running pertronix ignition module gapped at .03, I haven't increased it yet
to .045 as recommended. (Can anyone explain this gap difference?)

I have very cautiously timed the car with the vacuum advance disconnected
and plugged, RPM @ 900, engine warm, valves set, at 0deg as stated in all
the literature that I have. (Is this how all of you do it?)

Here is the problem; when driving on the freeway, about 65 mph (also
happened once on a hill), the car cut out as if only running on about 2
cylinders, I limped of the exit ramp and pulled over. The engine was
literally smoking hot. I started up again after only about one minute (It
ran normally at this point) so I connected the timing light and confirmed
the position at 0degs. The only things I could notice were that it seemed to
wander about 2 degrees and a very bad post ignition run-on (dieseling).
After a few minutes of cooling it seems to run well again.

After running the first full tank of gas through, I recorded 23 mpg.

I believe that I do have all the tin installed? When I am looking down on
the engine I can see the ground on both sides of the engine, is this
supposed to be closed off? And I don't know much about the air valve
controlled by the thermostat?

I certainly don't want to burn up my motor so any advice on these issues
would be appreciated!

And thanks for all the help that got me this far! If you want to see my car
through the restoration check it out here:
