I had a similar experience while building the engine for my Beetle. I had purchased a cheap set of bearings (live and learn, I'll insist on German, (Klobenschmidt) bearings for future rebuilds)that had an "extra" hole offset (180 degrees), from the dowel pin hole. This extra hole was slightly smaller than the dowel pin hole, and when I fit the crank into the case I aligned the wrong hole. As I tightened the case bolts, the pin crushed the softer metal of the bearing, pressing it very tight against the crank, seizing it tight.
