Way back in 1968 I bought a brand new VW Type3 1600 panel van in Zambia. During September of 1969 I travelled south through Rhodesia and Botswana to South Africa. At Johannesburg I called in to the VW agents there, Lindsay Saker Motors, to have a reversing light fitted. When I came to collect the car in the afternoon they apologised and said thye had run out of reversing light switches for the gearbox and had fitted this other switch at the back of the speedometer. When I came to use it, I found it most annoying because it would not switch the reversing lights on until the speedo cable in reverse direction had taken up the slack and one had travelled about a metre (a yard) backwards by which time one could have hit a tree, another car or even a child. Later, I fitted the proper gearbox reversing light switch which makes the reversing lights come on immediately one selects reverse gear. This is off topic: Nevertheless, despite this, I continued my holiday journey southwards to Cape Town and I can clearly remember stopping for lunch at a little town called Piketburg while travelling through the magnificent display of wild flowers all over that part of the country at that time of year. If I am not mistaken, I believe this town is where Ian Ruinaard lives??
