Up until May 1968 all Australian Type3s were fully manufactured in Melbourne but they retained dated features like drum brakes, open-centred wheels, 6-volts, single brake circuit, etc, etc. During 1968 Volkswagen started winding down its manufacturing operations in Australia and changing to assembling German-made cars from completely knocked down kits supplied from Germany. Thus, from June 1968 all Australian Type3s were CKD-assembled from German kits although still with a varying degree of Australian content such as Australian-made electrical components, some glass, tyres, etc. This means that an Australian Type3 chassis number prior to *318 210 963* will have a dated earlier style specification and build whereas a chassis number after this will have the normal German features. The important point here is that from June 1968 all Australian Type3s followed the normal German model changes. It is not very confusing. So, all Australian notchback, fastback and squareback Type3s from June 1968 until the end of Australian Type3 production in early 1974 have doors that have the same quarter window opening mechanism as per the "Superbug style plastic knob" to which Andrew refers.
