Ancient wisdom says that if your capacitor is duff, there will be a pit on the fixed contact, but if your (stock) coil is shorting, there will be a spike on it. If it doesn't make a significant spark (just a bit of a spit) when you open the points with ignition on, it probably means both are OK. They need to be the correct ones, just as your speakers must be the right impedence to work well with your amp. Since they don't print it on them, you should use the stock items to be sure. A bad coil or capacitor will give a weak spark, which would certainly make it harder for the engine to run. Dave.
