I don't have nearly Simon's background on this, but I have an opinion to
share. I suspect that the alphabetic suffix codes were nothing more than
marketing shorthand for a particular set of M-code options which the importer
chose to bring into a particular country. As such, they could really be almost
anything and could change yearly, or more often.

That hole is there to allow for a factory installed gasoline heater. At least in
the US, that became a factory option in 71-3. Any cars sold here without that
option came with the plug in the hole. I suppose it is possible that the same
hole was used for other options in other markets.

But the Canadian type 3s WERE German.
