You should also consider where the wear is. If it is in the direction 
that the generator belt pulls, then perhaps the belt was too tight. If 
the wear is all around then you should also check the crank to 
make sure it isn't cracked and flexing more than normal.

The fan hub really should not be able to come in contact with the 
inside of the case there.
