Re: [T3] Hard Starting (6V) (kinda long)

Confused?? You and me both Jim.

To try to clear it up, here is the sequence of events tonight.

I put the battery on charge for a couple of hours just to be sure that it was
fully charged. I came home and tried to start the Square using the ignition
switch. The starter spun the engine for about 10 seconds without it firing.
I went back and gave each carb a shot of ether. Again the starter turned
the engine over and I got one small "pop" but it did not start. Spinning the
engine with the starter for 30 seconds or so produced no additonal attempts
to fire. Tried the iginition switch again after that and nothing but a
"click". Would not turn over with the ignition switch. I walked around the
back of the car and reached underneath and jumped the starter solenoid with a
screwdriver and the starter spun the engine strongly and it "popped" a couple
of times. Spun the engine a few more times with the screwdriver with no
additonal firings. Climbed up and gave each carb another shot of ether and
again spun the motor over with the starter motor using the screwdriver
method. The engine fired up and after feather the throttle for a minute or
so, it ran and idled fine.

After leaving her run for 10 mintes or more, I shut her off and tried to
resart with the ignition switch. Nothing but a "click".

All of this was after I wired in the Ford Solenoid to the system.

These symptoms/observations are what led me to beleive that there are two
problems........one with getting the engine to turn over with the starter and
iginition switch and the other with the spark or fuel that requires the ether
to get it to start, but does not effect the running of the engine once it is
running. I agree that it is unlikely that the engine is tight. And a tight
starter would not respond to jumping of the solenoid either????, but mine
does. That is why I suspect the switch and a voltage drop that is not
allowing the solenoid to kick.

Does that make things any clearer? Thanks for all the input so far.
