 I was the one about a month ago that had that loud noise from the fan area.
I did fix it without pulling the engine.  So it is possible.  Runs good now.
What happened was one of the bolts that holds the fan on, fell out.. of
course its only accessible by removing the whole fan.  grrrrr

You just have take almost everything off,  Front fan assembly, pulley wheel
and fan.  I had to buy the big sockets to get it all off and back on.  Be
patient..  I even had to work around the headers.
