Think of gas as the part of your intake that contains the energy (calories), soooo...: Rich = too much gas Lean = too little gas 35 mpg is a lot for these cars, so this sounds pretty lean to me. OTOH, plugs that are dark with carbon are usually a sign of too rich a mixture (the carbon comes from the gas.) Of course there are other things that can darken the plugs, like too much oil leaking past the rings.
