3K isn't one of the usual series; 3.3K would be, or 2.2K. Best to get two 1.5K and put them in series. Don't cannibalise another brain unless you know it's bad. I think it unlikely to be just the resistor - they usually burn out because the current has risen higher than it should in that circuit for some reason. Dave.
