For a very basic meter, useful for most auto tasks, you can spend much less than $100 and get a suitable meter. (On the flip side, you can pay what you want on the top end!) One big choice you'll have is digital vs. analog. While digital is new and cool, analog is neato for whatching changes in real time such as the opening and closing of f.i. trigger points. Things in the "you get what you pay for" department include sensitivity, range, and quality of physical construction.
