My original spare is a Metzeler 5:90/15. I had to fit it last year and it doesn't show any cracks or anything - and, of course, the rim is mint and the rim weight is German. I have had both fabric radial and 600:15's on my cars in the last couple of years, and the bias ply are good for town, but hard riding. Very light steering with them on. Never seem to wear, either.
