If it stays at infinity, then the points are "stuck" open. This is the more common failure mode, usually caused by dirt between the points which keeps them from contacting one another. There are a number of things which can go wrong in the dist. I rebuild these quite often and charge $55 + parts to do this. Usually the only parts needed are a new vacuum advance can, or nothing. The price includes return shipping.
