My Notch doesn't have a 'stub' on the mirror stem either. Looks like it's particular to the 69 Squareback. Andre Hee, hee... Cycling to pick my daughter up from school this afternoon, I rode past a Fastback: 1969, VIN 319 165XXX, day/night mirror, *no* extra stub.
