It comes out the bottom. There is a large hex nut there that you 
remove, then pull out the outlet pipe. Under there you will find a 
"stack of washers" that you pull off. This "stack of washers" is 
actually gasket/flange/gasket, where the flange is a metal flange 
that the filter screen is attached to. You may have to pry a bit to 
get them loose, but if you have a new part in your hand it will be 
pretty clear what needs to happen.

If you buy new parts, you might as well get new gaskets, too. If 
VW can't help you, Berg has these parts.
