[T3] Master Cylinder Question

>Problem with changing the rod length is that even if it works afterward,

>Remember all... Brakes are a SAFETY system... if the manuel says NOT to do
>something with them... DONT DO IT!! Your life and that of your passengers
>depends on it!! Keith

I agree completely with the above, and were I a VW mechanic and somebody
drove my 70 fasty in to have the brakes done, I would say, I'll work on it,
as long as it's never been touched by anyone besides the dealer in the last
30 years.
Unfortunately this car has spent the last 30 years in America being serviced
in alleys
and back yards for all I know, The master cylinder push rod could have been
spun as the speed of the propellers atop the multi-colored hats of the PO's,
I can't say for sure. The problem is, it's hard to know. If an adjustment is
possible, it's safe to assume someone has dickered with it because they CAN.
On the other hand, my adjusting pedal stop bracket looks like its never been
touched. Thankfully I have the Bentley - though an older edition (1974) - the
Bentley is great - at least it gives a measurement to determine the relative
proper length that pedal travel should be, which I will attempt to restore.
The Muir book and to a certain extent all of our manuals must sometimes be
read as historical documents. The cars have outlived the editors and they may
not always account for circumstances of fate. I will be very careful not to
put my wife and 8 month old baby behind the wheel until I'm satisfied the
push rod is actuating as far as it should in the event of semi-failure. I'm
hopeful that I solved the line problem as I just took the lists advice and
switch the left front line around to the port at the right end of the
cylinder, and now both light switches are running along the left. Tomorrow I
will attempt to loosen the stop bracket and return the push rod to hopefully
relatively factory settings. Sorry for being a windbag and thanks for the
help. Advice and criticism welcomed. -Chris
