1966 was the first year that the Type III was officially imported
to the U.S. It was also the first year of the Fastback. Up through 1965,
if you wanted a Type III in the U.S., you typically went looking for one to
import -- and, at that time, the only two of the three main body styles
that had been created were the Notchback and the Squareback. (O.k., so
some dealers sold grey market cars, but, still, they were Squarebacks or
Notchbacks.)

For the 1966 model year, you could just walked down to any local
dealer to get a Type III, so it was much easier. However, only the
Squareback and Fastback were available. You'd have to go through
comparatively more trouble to get a Notchback at that point.
